You know what? The hot, sunny weather can GO AWAY any time now. No, really. I don't care how much of a gothy cliché I am for saying that. I don't like hot, sunny weather. In my perfect world, the temperature is always 65 degrees. Cloudy skies, clear skies with a few wispy clouds, either of those are fine. But 65 degrees, no warmer. (Yes, autumn IS my favorite season, however did you guess?)

In an effort to distract myself from the angry blazing orb in the sky, I've been looking at all sorts of Halloween websites. Yes, I still want stuff from Halloween Visions. [livejournal.com profile] stroppy_baggage thinks it's a bit on the overly-whimsical side, but (obviously) I don't. Their sugary treats website (Creepy Confections) fills me with longing for little cupcakes decorated with elaborate Halloween-y things.

Another distraction I've been contemplating is manga. I picked up a volume of The Tarot Cafe over the weekend, and was amused by it. I'm probably going to pick up Bizenghast soon, but recommendations of other titles I might like would be keen. Um, if the characters look like they escaped from an issue of the Gothic+Lolita Bible, and if the plot is vaguely related to the occult, fairy tales, or vampires, I'd probably like it.

Shallow Fashion Details (behind a cut tag for those who just. don't. care. about sparkly shoes):

  • Black, glittery ballet flats, which are *adorable* and I need to get a second pair to hide away for later, when these sorts of shoes are no longer available*.

  • Pink fishnet tights

  • Black rayon, lace-trimmed, knee-length sun dress with a full skirt, worn with a black petticoat.

  • Black lace jacket that is slightly longer than mid-thigh, with oodles of tiny buttons down the front, princess seams, and a full skirt.

  • Black lace choker with my silver Perky Ankh pendant.

  • Hair pulled back in a high ponytail with two black & pink ribbon ragtie scrunchies.

  • A cuff bracelet made from pink cotton overlaid with black antique lace and embellished with jet beads (from Dollflesh Designs).

  • ... and the usual makeup, but you probably guessed that.

*I'm not kidding about that. I firmly believe that when you find a perfect pair of shoes (or dress, or blouse, or jacket), if you can afford to, buy two and set one aside. That way, in a few years when you've worn the original Perfect Thing until it fell apart, you won't be completely bereft. Of course, this only really works if you have a strong sense of your own personal style and aren't going to be flitting madly between trends every year. But yes, in a few weeks, I am going to be ordering a second pair of the black glittery shoes, because they are comfy and make me smile happily every time I catch sight of them.

Huh, an awful lot of burbling about nothing terribly important. Sometime soon-ish, there will be another post from me about The State of the Gothic Subculture and What It All Means to Me, but right now? Shooooooes! Manga! Whining about the evil orb in the sky!

... and now, I should go prod a writer about some topics.

I am so with you on the weather!

I mean, unlike Seattle, it's supposed to be sunny and hot here in August. . .but usually we get afternoon thunderstorms that cool things down a bit. Not this year!

Psst: 8/31 looks likely for the Vogue for me due to Labor Day weekend travel. Yeah, I know that's absurdly far in advance, but that's how I usually operate.

I'm a sad Case in Point. Back in college I found the perfect pair of lace-up black walking shoes. They felt like sneakers, yet looked beautiful with everything up to, but not quite including, a formal ball gown. I wore them until they fell apart and I've never found their like since.

I was at Borders today and noticed that there's a manga version of "Nightmare Before Christmas" out. It looks absolutely gorgeous.

::screams::

WHAT?! Well, I guess I know what I'm picking up. Do you remember where in Borders was it located?

From: [identity profile] sophiap.livejournal.com

It was with all the other manga. I think Borders generally shelves alphabetically by title.

I am totally with you on the buying two of "something perfect." I have a second pair of the red satin chinese slippers (as close as I could get so far to ruby slippers), which look good with darn near everything.

If it helps you to know that someone is not hurting for a few weeks because of the ball-o-fiery doom in the sky, can you tolerate it for a few more weeks? Cuz then for me is months and months of pain...sigh. I'm working on plans to relocate to Hawaii, but currently my department won't let me telecommute from there.

By the way, where did you pick up The Tarot Cafe? It sounds interesting, and I've been wanting to check out manga.

I know the heat & sun make you happy, so I do try and keep my grousing to a low mutter.

I picked up The Tarot Cafe from B&N. They have a surprising amount of manga. The next time I'm in one, I'm going to browse the shelves a little more thoroughly.

From: [identity profile] poetry-lady.livejournal.com

I'll have to stop in to B&N tomorrow, I think...

While I admit I'm a sun junky, I do enjoy the swirling foggy days that we get here. And watching the fog in the Snoqualmie Valley is facinating--very moor-esque, brooding, haunted, all the cliche'd adjectives. Some days, out in Duvall-land, the fog never lifts, even though it's blazing sunshine over the hill in Redmond.

I'll enjoy those fog-broody days, but the dead of winter just--blah. Maybe if I didn't have an inside office...light is my friend.

Buy Two and set one aside

Absolutely. But -- and this is very important -- buy two in THE SAME COLOR. Do not buy a second version in a different color for variety; you will never wear it. Buy the same skirt twice so that you will have that particular skirt twice as long.

I disagree. I have multiples of many much-loved items in more than one color and they all get regular wear.

The rest of it, dead on.

(However, I will only buy clothing and shoes in multiples--never jewelry.)

R's work is fantastic! I own several pieces of hers and the Skella dolls we sell are hers as well.
Always buy 2-3 pairs of a shoe that fits well and I know will only be seasonal and manufactured once. Same theory on lipstick!

Comfy, too? Looks like I know what my weekly splurge will be. I can't do heels anymore and those are adorable.

Speaking of the big glowing orb
I bought my first wide brimmed hat yesterday.

perfect shoes

you are absolutely right - I do the same thing. Especially in sales. There was a sale in TopShop not so long ago and got the most perfect pair of heeled velvet boots lined in gold kid. Bought two pairs and embellished them with some sequinned motifs I had left over from this - the ones on the sleeve heads:

oh, and talking of shoes, and shallow fashion details - which I, naturally, love doing, what did we arrange re the suede kitten heeled granny boots? Confused...

Re: perfect shoes

::stares in open-mouthed amazement at the outfit::

That's beautiful.

No, we never did arrange what we were doing about the granny boots, 'cos I completely spaced on it. Send me email at headmistress (at) gothic-charm-school (dot) com, and we'll figure it out. :)

Re: perfect shoes

I had such fun making that outfit - just love playing with cutting stripes...that started as four curtains bought for £5 in a thrift store. Ben nearly had caniptions when I asked him to lend me the cash...quite a battle in the shop as he thought they were truly vile and tried to stop me buying them. I reminded him that he is completely incapable of 'seeing' how fabric will translate into garments, and now that the ensemble is complete he loves it and has had to bow to my superior judgement...

Shoooooooooooooooooes!

the shoes sound fabulous. :)

I found a lovely pair of very basic low heeled black velvet pumps on my expedition to the thrift stores last week. I am so happy that my boy is one of those guys who says "well yes, you do have 85 pairs of shoes, and yes, most of them *are* black, but you really don't have any that are velvet and good for dressing up or going out". *purr* So, of course, I bought them. They fit like gloves. I also picked up 2 velvet dresses, and a velvet catsuit thing (which he loves on me and I will *never* wear outside of the home).

I am still of the opinion that we can recover shoes to make new ones. I still want to sit down and do that one of these days.

call me tonight?
