My best friend throughout my childhood, from about age 9 onwards, was a boy named Jimmy. We were both geeky kids who read waaaaay more SF, fantasy, horror, and mythology than might have been good for us. We were inseparable for about five years, and then his parents moved to Portland.

Jimmy was crap at writing letters. He'd occasionally send a card for our birthday (I'm one year older, to the day), but that was about it. But he had this pattern where every three or five years, he'd turn up out of the blue at Mom & Dad's house, and I'd get to talk to him for a few minutes.

...

Guess who just called me from Mom & Dad's house? ::grins::

I knew he was married (and to a woman who sounds like his perfect match). I knew he taught Irish dance. I DID NOT know he's the father of an eighteen-month old baby girl. I'm trying to reconcile my mental image of him at thirteen with being a parent, and ... yeah. Freaky.

We swapped phone numbers. We're going to talk later this week.

I keep grinning. This particular bit of my past catching up with me is a nice surprise.

Better than mine: my father told me Thursday last that my best guy friend in high school is getting married in October -- to a woman 20 years younger.

I am afraid I am going to have to make this a rule: my friends need to stop hitching up with people I could have given birth to without folks thinking I started obscenely early.

I can only imagine how delighted you must be.

That is so cool.

I have a friend from high school who will call me, without fail, on Mother's Day (I was the first of our "gang" to have a kid).

I hope your reunion is everything you want it to be. You know, I confess to being kind of surprised--I wouldn't have guessed that your best friend at that age was a boy! Don't know why I'm so surprised about this.
