A word of advice to the general public:

When having a noisy, boisterous dinner conversation wherein you and your friends are talking about how 'alternative' all of you once were in the '80s and '90s, after someone says ". . . used to be goth, but grew out of it like everyone does", you should strive for subtlety in your reactions.

The whole table suddenly going quiet as everyone glances at the lady dressed in full Victorian Gothic sitting at the next table? Not subtle. Not even a little bit.

I believe you said something once about keeping their dirty paws off our subculture.

These would be folks who were more of the Spooky Kids (tm) variety who were into the black for the SHOCK VALUE and have NO CLUE abotu the subculture at all.

and how could you *possibly* have been in FULL Victorian Gothic and have *no* hatpins at all?? Hmmmm???

and how could you *possibly* have been in FULL Victorian Gothic and have *no* hatpins at all?? Hmmmm???

I was rushing out the door to go to dinner, plus the usual top hat doesn't actually *need* hatpins to keep it in place. That'll teach me to skip using them.

that is why I gave you *decorative* hat pins, so you don't NEED to use them, but you can as an extra bit of glitz for any hat. ;)

Hmmmm. So is it appropriate to smile sweetly and raise one's wineglass in their general direction?

Had I been there with a hatpin, I would have lent it to you.

Heh, I might wear jeans to work, but I just dyed my hair blue- do I need to turn in my card now?

;-)

You have style darling, not a question of being a grownup.

Hee hee, you only missed it because I did it last night ;-)

Blue velvet- so it is wonder woman black right now. If it fades to a blue that you can see is blue rather than black I have a photographer ready ;-)

I have been yearning for my hair to stay dark and regular hair dyes were fading. I figured better to go blue than dye black. We all know how temporary black is ;-) And wow is my hair happy and healthy now!

So yes, time for me to set the style a notch higher, and good so far!

Hee hee, we will see what I do with the new look. Right now it is super casual clothes and hands that are stained blueish purple ;) Tres chic! lol

Y'know...that just bites :P

I'm clinging tenaciously to my Goth Card...the only thing I think I'm doing wrong is I'm not clubbing anymore. It's just that what few times I went out to the club...I wasn't all that impressed.

I still like my SpookyBits...and when I'm not so lazy, my hair will be a nice, scary red again...

In short, I don't think I'll ever 'grow out' of it. So..I guess I refuse to grow up :)

Couldn't you have beaned him with a dinner roll or something?

I would like to point out, also, that if you "grew out" of something like that you were likely never one to begin with.

Signed,

Still a punk, I just dress beter these days.

"Oh no dear, you were never goth, just a poser trying to glom onto somebody else's train because you have no clue."

Now, I don't claim to know my social etiquette as well you do. It seems like a properly pointy chopstick could be substituted in an emergency!

From: [identity profile] ladymoira.livejournal.com

WOW! I've actually been told that to my face. I met up with someone I knew in high school we were talking about what we do and what we like and all. When music came up I mention liking goth among several others like classical and such as well as the goth atmosphere etc.

His response was "I liked goth too, but I grew out of it." I told him very politely that no, his tastes merely changed as can happen. He wanted me to e-mail him and I "lost" the e-mail. I didn't realize that it's a somewhat common perception at the time. It's not surprising though that complete strangers can also participate in such childish behavior.

Oh dear.

I almost snorted my morning tea out my nose.

Clearly you need to keep an emergency hat pin stash on your person at all times.

One might, in that situation, have leaned across in his general direction and ask him if he'd grown out of having any semblance of socialisation or good manners, along with growing out of his faux goth?

i'm still uncertain where and when fashion and subcultural choices became something which was disposable. for myself, i've looked for things that can last, not for things i'd want to replace in a few years because some fashion doyens declare it passé.

Sounds like the sort of people who "cut loose" a bit in college 'cause that's when it's socially acceptable to go a bit counterculture, only to return to the shiny ideal upon graduation like a grownup ought to.
