Is it too much to ask to find a tribal belly dance class in Greenwood/Phinney Ridge/Ballard that DOESN'T meet on Monday or Wednesday nights? I guess so.
Sounds like fun. I hope you find a class that fits your schedule. Out of curiosity, how does tribal belly dance differ from other sorts of belly dancing?
ATS (american tribal style) claims to be 'improvisational', but as a beginning dance student, I found it very rigid. Tribal is always danced as a group, with a leader who does all the 'improvising', giving movement cues to the rest of the group. You will learn a basic set of moves and their cues, with not much room for individual creativity.
While I prefer the visual aesthetic of tribal style (costuming), I found I much prefer the individualism of cabaret style dancing. What I think is best is to study all the different styles you can and take what you like from each, then make your dance your own. I guess I fall more into the tribal fusion school.
Troupe Hipnotica. Ballard-ish. Beginner classes on Sundays. $10 drop in. I have a card for four classes that I'll never be able to use with my new work schedule, and I'll gladly sell it to you for what I paid ($35)
