Dad has been admitted to hospital - his hematocrit is very low, so he's getting a big blood transfusion. They still don't know why his hematocrit keeps dropping, so he's also getting a bunch of tests. He's going to be there at least two days.
When I checked on him last week, he mentioned that he was eating a lot of ice.
"Isn't that a sign that you're low on iron?" I asked.
"Yes, but I'm already on the highest dosage supplement I can have", he answered.
APPARENTLY I should have followed that up with "Have you talked to your doctor about this?" I love my Dad, he's a smart guy, but someone remind me that he has never been prone to looking after himself.
Apparently his cardiologist told him he was literally a quart low, and called the fire dept. to give him a ride to the hospital because the doctor knew Dad would try to drive himself.
On the very small bright side, Dad texted me about all this as soon as he was admitted, so at least he's learning to communicate.

"I'm fine!" --my mother, mere single-digit hours before calling 911 and going to the hospital for speed-tracked admission.

Why am I the boomer whisperer? Why do I have to drive all the way up to Kirkland to get my mother to go to the ER when she KNOWS she should be going to the ER?
Right there with you.
