And it's all [livejournal.com profile] aimeejmc's fault.

Ruby slippers. Made with crystals.

I have this terrible, terrible urge to buy lots of flat-back siam red crystals, and then transform one of my pairs of pointy-toe flats. A new project for Stitch & Bitch nights.

...

...

Look, I always wanted to be the Wicked Witch of the West when I grew up, and I think she deserved the damn shoes. They belonged to her sister, after all. So making my own pointy-toe ruby slippers isn't *quite* as crazy as it might sound.

...

Okay, yes, it is as crazy as it sounds. Don't care.

Especially if you've seen Wicked!

I haven't seen it yet, alas. However, I have almost memorized the soundtrack.

I found it hard to get into, and even finish the book. How are you finding it? Have you read any of his others?

From: [identity profile] sistawendy.livejournal.com

It does start off a little slowly, but it didn't really bother me. I haven't read any of his others, but I've heard that Wicked is one of the better ones.

It's been years since I read the book (and my copy has gone missing, so I need to get another copy to re-read). There were parts of it that I felt dragged a bit. To be honest, I prefer the changes made to the story for the musical version, which concentrates mostly on the changing relationship between Elpheba & Galinda.

Even better for moi would be a curled up toe ruby slipper!

Not crazy at all!!! I've always wanted a pair myself. Dorothy was no witch and didn't deserve them! I have a pair of red satin chinese brocade shoes, and I wore those with all black and my b&w stripy tights to a poetry reading I had to emcee (costumes give me courage). There is no substitute for real ruby slippers.

I'm also thinking about making my own pair, as my feet are not quite small enough to fit into the little girl shoes (altho it's close...I have tiny feet for my height).

If Wicked comes to town, a group outing should be planned, as I want to see it, too.

My boyfriend's brother wants to be Dorothy for Halloween. So for Xmas I bought him RED high top converse and red glitter-ized them, along with some ruby red crystals for his ruby slippers. =)

right on! I glued superglued sequins to a pair of platforms once ... then left sequins in the cab, the club, the street etc.

From: [identity profile] poetry-lady.livejournal.com

Oh crafty ones, what would you use to adhere said sequins and sparklies to shoes with? Glue gun? Other? I'm new to being crafty.

I'd probably use spray adhesive. 3M makes a great one that i can't think of the name of right now, but big cans of it are available from places like Fred Meyer.

I'm going to check with a friend of mine who has put flat-back crystals on a LOT of things, and ask her what the best adhesive to use is. I don't know if the spray adhesive would be that good, as I would have to be meticulous and set the crystals in rows -- the spray adhesive would probably dry too quickly for that.

Cool. I look forward to hearing the authoritative word.

A recent discussion on shoe art pointed me to JudiKins Diamond Glaze (http://store.scrapbook.com/rp-400.html) since flexibility is a key issue with shoes. The stress points where anything bends tends to pop off crystals unless you have a flexible glue. The artist who was attaching larger pieces to shoes used E6000. hmm. I make a lot of competition figure skating dresses. I use hotfix rhinestones, they have glue on the back of em, that you heat up using a bejeweler or decorative touch wand or similar device. The tools in question come with several different tips for handling different sizes of rhinestones.

Check out http://www.l-orna.com/ for the 'decorative touch' wand and hot fix crystal rhinestones by swarovski in several sizes and colours.

It would be painstaking work, but it would allow you to place the rhinestones exactly where you want them, and I find that the hotfix adhesive does hold pretty well on fabric, so you'd might want to get a pair of satin pumps to use as a base.

Oh, thank the whatevers, I am NOT the only one? I just wanted her to bean Dorothy over the head with a Munchkin, grab the shoes, and fly away fast.

Then again, I was also the one who wanted Cruella to get it the hell over with and make the friggin' coat, already...

muHA!

Ruby slippers! And honestly, Peev, it could have been a damned sight worse. What would you do if Clovis suddenly decided he needed a flying monkey as a minion?

From: [identity profile] domestinatrix.livejournal.com

What's crazy about that?
What? Like you'd do them in pink?

From: [identity profile] bluejay23.livejournal.com

And if *anyone* could pull them off, it would be you. :)

Crazy? Quite the contrary -- I think it's a fabulous idea!

I have some ruby slippers from the little girls' shoe section at Target. (Oddly, the girls' size four fit my size seven women's feet.) But they're flats and glitter-coated, and therefore not nearly as appealing as some with heels and crystals. Regardless, I enjoy prancing gleefully about in them --- before I realized I could join in on the fun, I'd always envied the little girls who could wear their glittery ruby slippers anywhere and everywhere.

Oh god. You have infected me with the same terrible urge. But in dark purple/blue.
