Have I talked about the fancy manicures I've been getting? I can't remember. Anyway, 'round about end of August, I researched my favorite nail place, discovered they were being super-careful about COVID protocols, and booked an indulgent pedicure and gel manicure. Mostly because having someone massage my legs for an hour while I sat in a massage chair would help my pain levels - pretty nails were a bonus.

When the manicure portion started, the nail tech took one look at my fingernails and asked "Are your nails really weak and brittle? Do they bend and snap easily? Tear?" WHY YES THEY DO. She suggested trying builder gel, which is some sort of super-boosted gel + acrylic polymer that is set with UV light, just like regular gel manicures, and only $10 more than a gel manicure. Sure, why not.

I didn't break any nails. The polish didn't lift or chip at ALL. So I went back a month later, they used fancy tiny Dremel-type files to remove the color and the base layer, then applied another one. (And another pedicure + massage chair, ohthankg-d.)

You can see where this is going. I now budget for monthly goth upkeep/pain relief. And after 5 months of non-breaking nails, have the pointy talons I've always wanted!

I have been using the builder gel on my own nails, and trying to get the angles and stuff right for the molding stickers. It's not easy stuff, but having stronger nails is soooo worth it. I am hoping my nails have grown out enough that I can just keep doing the polish layers on them soon, and not need the builder layer, but boy is it nice to have that extra strength on my nails when I do use it.
