There is an antique silk top hat en route to me. From the auction-running branch of the Seattle Goodwill, which is kind of ridiculous, but hey! I nabbed a hat!

Once it arrives (and I've made sure there's no weirdness with the fit), then the decorating! There are lengths of vintage hat veiling currently soaking in a black dye bath right now, along with ostrich feathers. Hey, when you find a bundle of 7 perfect-condition, extra-large ostrich plumes at the thrift store, you buy them, no matter what color they are.

Seattle Goodwill is on eBay? Have you seen shopgoodwill.com?

That's great ~ I love that it's coming from so nearby! Antique ones I've found have often been smaller (for wearing higher atop the head) than most modern ones, so I hope the fit is what you're wanting.

You probably already knew this, but just in case ~ whenever I've dyed feathers in the past (especially antique ostrich plumes), they fluff up perfectly after if you use a hairdryer on a low heat setting :)

you can also use a curling iron (also on a low setting) to curl them
