Making some sort of jewelry from bones and feathers is the new gluing cogs and brass stampings together in terms of DIY indie jewelry.

This is fine with me, because I like the neo-pagan bones and feathers everywhere thing better than the hotglued cogs. But it's interesting to see what bandwagons people are jumping on.

Does this mean steampunk is over? Signs point to yes.

i also like bones and lace and raggedy strips of red frayed silk <3

lolin' forever because someday Egyptian Goth will be back ... i just know it ... it's just a matter of how far ahead of the curve i am (that whole hipster illuminati/gold pyramid thing does NOT count towards Egyptian Goth making a comeback by the way, though i found a few cute things for my wardrobe while that was a Thing).

Thankfully, no. It just means the people trying to jump on the bandwagon and make a fast buck with a bunch of ill-made jewelry are hopefully going to start jumping back off the bandwagon soon.

Yeah, I'm liking it as well, for obvious reasons. Though I'll also love it when we start getting a good mix of stuff, with some nice tribal bones-and-mechanism shamanry.

I am looking forward to that time, too! But I think there needs to be a few more people doing it before we really see an upswing in designs.

So far, you're the only person I've seen really rocking the Egyptian Goth thing, which looks FANTASTIC on you.

I am all for bones and lace and frayed red silk! But I am also lucky that I know people who work with all of those things and do it well.

(Which reminds me, I need to email Laurel and see how she's doing ...)

this is pushing every single one of my buttons.

Daaaaamn. That is nice. HOWEVER, I will just mention that if you are looking to eventually get an Egyptian Goth painted jacket, let me know and I'll put you in touch with [livejournal.com profile] maiaarts. Because Thea's painted artwork on clothing is, IMO, even better than that, and she'll paint exactly what you want. She painted this jacket (http://ic.pics.livejournal.com/cupcake_goth/408661/196909/196909_original.jpg) for me.

mmmmmm, yes please! did you provide the jacket I assume? She is cool w/ real leather?

and now I am picturing a movement that combines the background roots of steampunk (the backstory stuff, I mean), with the Egyptian and Art Deco styles of the 20s & 30s... lots of brass, details, flourish, on clean lines, with bits of sparkle worked in. Maybe using a few terribly modern materials like vinyl or pvc. Maybe actual metal plating where the original styles had layers of pleated fabric...

oh yes, I can see it all very clearly....

I think my buddy Brandon sells some of his art (Aspects of the Dead is what his stuff is called, I think) at this. I'll have to check it out sometime.

Innnnteresting. The west coast hippie/raver/burner world went through an epic decade of what we called "feathers & leather" (which also involved a lot of bones) and seems to just be coming out of it. Perhaps it's contagious? I'm thinking here of skingraft and this bride: http://offbeatbride.com/2008/11/beautiful-dreadlocked-bride

You and me both! I'm finding it really funny that I find another egyptian goth here of all places! Even funnier that you're in the chicagoland area as well! :) you have made my day! keep being beautiful!

Unrelated to anything here, but I made a thing I thought you would appreciate and I thought I should share:

My suspicion is that the "feathers & leather" look has been slowly filtering out of the west coast hippy/raver/burner scene to the hipster/nu-goth/"no really i'm an occultist" fashion blogs, and it's starting to hit critical mass.

The stuff I really like is the cast sterling replicas of bones and claws, like from Bloodmilk.
