Look, everyone knows I have a tragic weakness for bombast. This is not a secret. Give me power chords and overwrought lyrics with gothy clichés* and I will be gleeful.

With that disclaimer out of the way: One of the munchkins over on the Emilie Autumn forum asked me if I had ever heard the song "Jillian" by Within Temptation. Er, no? I said, but checked it out on iTunes. I liked it enough to investigate more by the band. Do any of you listen to them? Or have suggestions for bands like them?

*Bands I would list in the "Bombast!" category include the Sisters Of Mercy, Queensryche (especially the Rage For Order album), HIM (yes, I own a lot of music by them, and grin whenever I listen to any of it), and Autumn Tears. My Chemical Romance would almost be placed in the "Bombast!" category (especially The Black Parade), but are a little too ... punk-influenced to be strictly Bombast kids.

Oh, and on the topic of musical suggestions, if you like HIM, check out Lacrimas Profundere. Gorgeous, gorgeous music. Lots of lovely minor chords.

Clan of Xymox, VAST, Eisbrucher, Deathwatch Beetle Repairman, hocico...more will occur to me later...

To me the hight of bombast in symphonic metal is Therion. You should definitely check them out, they're simply the awesomest band.
And may I advise my own band? *shameless advestising*

Hi, I'm popping out of lurkdom to share some bombast with you! Hope you like. :)
If you haven't listened to Lacrimosa yet, you simply must, especially to "Elodia" and "Fassade." They--Tilo and Anne--sing mostly in German but they do translate the lyrics to English. And I just love Tilo's voice. Pluuus, Anne was part of Two Witches.

I also recommend:
-early Theatre of Tragedy (esp. "Aegis")
-The Sins of Thy Beloved, Epica, After Forever, Alas, Nightwish
-early Tristania (esp. "Widow's Weeds")
-Haggard (esp. "Eppur Si Muove")
-Artrosis--Polish
-Aesma Daeva (esp. "Here Lies One Whose Name Was Written In Water")

And ones you might like, may have some bombast:
Dargaard, Dark Sanctuary--French, Illuminate--German, Goethes Erben--German, Autumn's Grey Solace, Arcana.

were I you, I'd head to Last.fm and start plugging in tags to see what comes up. Symphonic metal, folk metal, goth metal, and of course bombast. It'll play you stuff, find a song you like, click to the band station and it will play you similar material as well as that band. Or you could just start with the Nightwish station and go from there. I've discovered quite a few bands I really like that way. I've also played with tags like 'haunting', 'janglepop', and 'melancholy' to find more interesting things, depending on my mood at the moment.

I have their entire discography, if it interests you.

This! I saw them last week. You can't really get more bombast in rock music than they do. Especially Megalomania (of Origin of Symmetry) and Exogenesis (all three parts, of The Resistance)

I'm rather partial to Carfax Abbey myself. They might just qualify as bombast. Big power cords and such.

Actually going to throw a second recomendation on the Muse front. For a newish band they have some good bombast going for them. One of the few bands on the radio I really like right now.

Also: If you like Within Temptation, you should also check out a band called Edenbridge.

I too am coming out of my lurkdom...I wholeheartedly recommend Within Temptation as well as the many other suggestions (E Nomine, Kamelot and Nightwish especially, although E Nomine's songs are mainly all German, and it's that alright, then I recommend Oomph!). I have noticed a lack of this group, they're still new-ish but damn, what a voice; Amberian Dawn.

How about just instrumental? I would recommend Apocalyptica, beautiful long haired boys playing metal (especially Metallica) on their cellos. *swoon* Oh Eicca!

That concert was epic. I went to the Denver show. I'm sorry you couldn't make it to the Seattle one!

OK. I stumbled over some more music I think you'd like.

This is Havayoth. It's a Gothrock band from SkellefteƄ, Sweden. The singer is Vintersorg, who went on to do a billion space black metal albums about elves and planets. But, he sung on this band's one album, 'His Creation Reversed'. He has a deep voice, and I think it fits their sound very very well.

Their best song, called 'The Watcher', is here:

It might not be power chords, but have you checked out Sopor Aeternus? If you're looking for GAF, there you have it.

Agreed, but in my opinion only Nightwish with Tarja was true Nightwish. So you might want to check the albums until and including "End of an Era", the following one(s?) with the new singer is just not as good as those before. The new singer just lacks the power in her voice that Tarja acquired by opera singing.
Well, if you like Nightwish as it was before Tarja was left the band (funny grammatical construction you might think, but it means that they made her leave because she kind of provoked it... German "sie wurde gegangen", which is very popular here when people don't want to spell it out that someone got fired) you might also want to check out Tarja's solo stuff 'cause as far as I know it sounds pretty much like the old Nightwish.

Cackle out loud? Why exactly? I thought it was one of the rather decent scenes of the movie...
Even that whole sparkle-thing wouldn't have been as bad if they hadn't put that *shimmer* sound to it. Oh, and the meadow looked like they borrowed it from the Teletubbies.

Eicca? Ach! Perttu! Or Paavo, though he's married and a father.
But I really do agree on Apo, they're geniuses! Best ever is Antero with his sunglasses, sitting all straight and stiff whilst the others are headbanging and stomping and stuff. *chortle*
