random tangent-y question

I have had off-and-on vague thoughts of getting a tricycle. A grown-up sized one, with a basket between the back wheels that would let me carry stuff.

(I never learned to ride a regular bicycle, due to a morbid certainty that I would fall off, my glasses would break, and the splinters would go into my eyes and blind me.)

Would I be able to ride a tricycle while dressed in my normal fashion? Would I have to switch to crinolines instead of hoop skirts?

The idea of riding around the neighborhood this summer is awfully attractive. But I refuse to give up dressing this way to do so. Anyone know if this is an idle dream I should give up on?

you would run the risk of catching hoop skirts in your chain. Crenolines are short enough that you should be ok. :)

The trick is to make sure you aren't going to be dragging anything low enought that it might catch on the ground or in any of the moving parts (pedals, wheels, chain, etc).

There's got to be a local shop that rents them. Then you can see how it'd actually work with different fashions, skirts, etc.

Also, if you're going to do this, pleaseplease get a helmet. Yes, it's not Goth(tm), but drivers are idiots, and we don't want a flat Jilli.

crinolines would definitely be the way to go. Hoop skirts on a tricycle are a fashion accident waiting to happen.

Yes, definitely, test one out from a rental place, or test-ride one at a bike shop. Trikes aren't common, but you'll want one with a deep swoop for your skirts to fit. Also, if you get one, get some mechanical-handy type you know to add covers here and there over the chains and other moving parts.

Keep in mind that trikes are heavier, so are more work to pedal. So consider getting a motorized one! You can buy aftermarket electric-drive kits that add oomph to your pedalling.
