Random stuff

Mom says "Thank you!" for all the birthday wishes. Dad is vastly amused that all of you think we're adorable. (*I* think we're adorable, too, but I also think we're crazy.) (The Stroppy One agrees with the latter part of that statement.)

---

I'm working from home today, thanks to insomnia. Ugh.

---

Someone remind me that I don't wear long charm-style necklaces, so I should stop looking at this Alice In Wonderland -themed one. (clicky-link!) But goodness, it's cute. I know how it's made, so I just need to find out what glossy medium is used over photo paper to make the lacquered insets for the pendants. (It's not ModgePodge, I know that much.) Oooh, then I could make my own GCS swirly-bat jewelry ...

---

Right. More tea, and back to editing.

I have some of that stuff (or something similar)! It's called Diamond Glaze (http://www.diamondglaze.com/dg_faq.html) and I haven't technically done anything with it yet. Somebody else is welcome to jump in here and say no it isn't.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah-ha! Go you and your crafting/diy knowledge! So, I assume this stuff is readily available at places like Michael's and Jo-Ann Fabrics?

[identity profile] weaselmom.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, I got mine at Jo-Ann, I believe. Alternatively, and I can't tell on my crappy work monitor, it might be under a glass oval and just adhesived on with Diamond Glaze.

the glossy stuff is probably either diamond glaze, resin, or a combination of the two.

i have played around with diamond glaze a little, since it seems much less toxic than resin. but i didn't get that perfectly smooth look that resin seems to have, so i got some to try, and the instructions actually suggest using a coat of the diamond glaze before putting the resin on anyway.

apparently you can get a free sample of the stuff here:

Thanks for the link--it would be nice to try it first to make sure it's what I'm needing for a project of mine!

1) Happy Birthday to your mom!
2) How dare you be offline when I have news?

[identity profile] sirriamnis.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:21 pm (UTC)(link)
WANT!

[identity profile] domestinatrix.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in favor of you learning how to make charms like that, then we could make necklaces that make more sense. Not only are the findings cheap looking, the seller mentions a bottle which doesn't exist, and what on earth does an old key have to do with Alice? Other than two of the three charms being from unrelated bits of Lewis Carroll, that necklace looks like she grabbed a random handful of junk from her jewelry box.

[identity profile] maudelynn.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Alice left the key to the tiny door on the table in the eat me drink me bit :)

Some of the charms consist of an oval frame, the paper image, and then a snap in pre-made acrylic oval piece. Another easy way to do this is using the Martha Stewart charm bracelet kits at Michael's. Same deal only its clear stickers that go over the image.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
A pre-made acrylic oval piece? I had no idea such things existed! Oh, this is amazing and dangerous knowledge for me to have.

I need to go to a Michael's soon, obviously.

[identity profile] oldhalloween.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 07:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not describing it very well. It might only be a UK jewelry supply item since pieces I purchased on etsy were from UK sellers. I took mine apart to see how it was done. It was only tension holding the small raised oval piece over the image. On charms I make I use the little charm frames with a slot on top and slide a piece of acetate in with the image to protect it. Its a snug fit too.

[identity profile] poetry-lady.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And don't forget you can sign up for Michael's email list and get a 40% off one item (any item NOT on sale) coupon virtually every week. Helpful if you're on a budget and are reasonably near a Michael's so it's not a huge special trip for the one item (unless you also know you'll buy a bunch of other stuff ON SALE.

the acrylic ovals do pre-exist, and I have some, somewhere around here. I think I have circles and squares. They have them in both hard and softer acrylic.

But I think this is something worth looking into more seriously, this year.

[identity profile] theblackdeer.livejournal.com 2009-01-29 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
You should not buy that. You should buy the necklaces I just put up on my LJ :)

ooh! wasn't yesterday Lewis Carroll's birthday ??

I think you want Diamond glaze.
Also....
www.firemoutaingems.com you can find all sorts of findings in various metals... even the wee little frame like charms you can put your own photos/images in!!
i am bewitched by these!

but, I've always wondered how you got into editing in the first place, if you don't mind sharing. If you do, pay me no mind.

Honestly? I fell backwards into it. I did freelance editing/writing for various projects, then one of my friends got a job at Giant Software Co. and suggested that I go talk to a couple of contract agencies about getting work as an editor. I went in, took an editing test, and have been employed as an editor (in one way or another) ever since.

Diamond Glaze is wonderful. I've also seen Resin charms (http://www.knoxnews.com/news/2007/nov/02/resin-necklaces-are-easy-fun-to-make-gifts-for/) that aren't hard to make, but I don't do resin at home because I have a kid who makes messes.

[identity profile] fiorituranotte.livejournal.com 2009-01-30 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
That necklace is wonderful. If you figure out how to make one, let me know.

Isn't crazy (the good kind) a major criteria for adorable? It is in my world.
