Today's LJ writer's block question, and other stuff

[Error: unknown template qotd]

At Convergence 13, there was a lady I would cross paths with who would cheerily call me Miss Cupcake. When we finally got a chance to chat, it turned out that she had no idea who I was. ("Wait, you're the Gothic Charm School lady? Oh my god! I love your site! I ... thought you'd be taller ... more matronly.") It was just that my wardrobe of black and pink and stripy (and fluffy petticoats) made her irresistibly think of cupcakes.

On the way home from Portland, I thought about it. I had been described as a pink & black frosted goth cupcake by other people for years. My favorite perfumes smelled of chocolate and frosting. And it was true, I was very fond of cupcakes. The LJ name change seemed like an obvious thing to do.

---

Sleep was once again defective last night, with taking a loooooong time to fall asleep, and then waking up multiple times throughout the night. Dear Body Clock, I know I am somewhat nocturnal, but I'm trying to keep a vaguely daywalker schedule for the job hunt, okay?

My brain also gave me another dream about being at Disneyland, woe. While I would love to go to Bats' Day in May, it's just not feasible. Just because a trip would count as a tax-deductible business expense (and it would, because I'd be doing a lot of GCS promotion and research) does not mean that there is room in the budget to take the trip. Again, woe! I miss the Haunted Mansion.

---

Speaking of travel expenses, I need to decide what the hell I'm going to do about Norwescon. I'm a guest, yay!, and I'm thinking of getting a hotel room for Friday and Saturday, so I have someplace to retreat to when needed, and so the Stroppy One doesn't have to drive me back and forth to SeaTac. The only problem is that the con block at the hotel is sold out, so now it's $159 a night. Ugh.

---

Today is for writing and hair dye. Not for sewing another skirt. No. No matter what the D.I.Y. part of my brain is clamoring for.

If it's possible could you take an airport shuttle from the hotel to the airport, then take the Light Rail to Westlake? Husband could then just pick you up downtown instead of going all the way to Sea-Tac. The Light Rail runs until 1am, IIRC, on the weekends.

Thank you for the suggestion, but I'd rather get a room. I just need to do some budget crunching.

Makes sense - I just wanted to throw it out there in case it could be useful.

You could try the La Quinta across the street - or see if there's folks who will split the room with you that you can stand.

I'm not a guest. Up until the move I still planned to get a badge and maybe day trip this time while also participating in the art show and the single pattern contest if I had time to get the sewing done. Now with the move and the dental expenses, I'm just not sure that's feasible - particularly since I'd also like to go to the VMB in Portland - which is just the weekend before this year... Bleah. I hate having to dither like this...

Was wondering if you'd be interested in getting together to craft/visit today or tomorrow?

We take our little one to Disneyland every year (we live in Washington, her grandparents are in Los Angeles) and it's still not enough for me. Too many years with an annual pass mean I want to go when it rains, eat pineapple whip and haunt New Orleans Square for hours on end!

For Bat's Day, I have a table of my own this year. Would you like me to put out your postcards? I'd need more, but there's plenty of time before then. :D

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, that would be wonderful! Thank you so much.

See if Doubletree has any rooms not in the conblock.

Also, I've stayed at La Quinta across the street. It's a perfectly nice hotel, albeit it is across the street.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
The price for the non-conblock is the $159/night price.

I'm considering the La Quinta. I'm just being a fussy and delicate gothy princess, because I wanted to stay on-site.

[identity profile] icprncs.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly? If you end up thrown into any of the far wings at the Doubletree (which last year they tried to do to us until we protested and agreed to take a smaller room in exchange for being closer, and did do to J&B), being "on-site" can be farther away from the event space than being at the La Quinta. (If you're willing to jaywalk across Int'l Blvd, of course.) And the cost tradeoff could be very worth it while your employment situation is still unsettled.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah-ha! That's the sort of information I was missing, thank you. Now to check out La Quinta's prices ...

[identity profile] prettyshrub.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
It's 159 even if you do Orbitz or one of those sorts of things?

One good thing about La Quinta, their breakfast layout includes an onsite waffle maker.

[identity profile] icprncs.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
If the money thing wasn't in play, being in the Doubletree is nice just to not have to go into the elements, but distance-wise it often comes out a wash. So if you can get into the La Quinta for a better price, it's probably worth it.

I had more than one Orycon where I walked a half-mile between the event hotel and my cheapie motor inn on the other side of the bridge because it was saving me forty bucks a night. :)

It's one of those awkward times of year when it's too warm for n blankies but too warm for n+1.

Have you actually been given access to the pro mailing list? I have yet to receive a response to my pro survey, even after several emails and a phone call.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a pro mailing list? I still haven't received a response to my pro survey, either. The only reason I *know* I'm a guest is because Alexia cc'd me on a reply to someone on the programming board. They kept asking her if I was willing to do certain events, and she kept replying with "You people have her email. Contact her."

So, y'know. Typical for NWC.

[identity profile] loree.livejournal.com 2010-01-21 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there were mailing lists the last two years, so I'm presuming there's (going to be?) one this year. Other than a slight delay in getting panel schedules out, last year's programming ran really smoothly. It's a pity SunnyJim had a schedule conflict that wouldn't let her run things again this year.

Dye the hair! I finally got around to doing mine yesterday, so I can say with conviction that you'll ultimately be glad you made that decision.

If I had time for another Bat's Day, I'd try and talk you into it. Last time I went I sat at the tea cup ride for several change over of riders waiting for the perfect set of goth girls to ride so I could get some pictures. Then the heat got to me and I had to wander off in search of better shade. I was thinking "If only Jilli was here."
