Another post? Good heavens. Dithering over clothing sizes, and I need advice.

So, remember that amazing jacket I burbled about? (Yes you do. If you really don't, look here.)

It hits "select H&M locations" on Thursday. Now, [livejournal.com profile] e_juliana has kindly offered to go pick one up for me. Which means the question is, what size should I tell her to get?

The waistcoat I'm wearing at the moment? Size 12. A lot of my jackets are size 12. But what if Roberto Cavalli sizes (or H&M sizes, for that matter) run small? Because it's not going to exactly be easy to go exchange the jacket.

::dither dither dither::

So, can anyone give me information about H&M sizes?

I would check the store website for their size guides. Typically, I've found H&M to be rather true to size.

Personally, I find H&M runs small. Last year pre-pregnancy, when I weighed ~140, the sweaters I bought from them were Larges but were tighter than I'd like. Ditto with fitted pants: while I was wearing a 4 in J. Crew, I was wearing a 10 in H&M pants.

Also, I'd size up because, god forbid, if necessary you can tailor down.

Can she take a measuring tape with her and measure bust and waist on the jacket? If she has your measurements she can make a better judgement call.

That would be my suggestion too. Within one store, individual brands can vary like crazy, & this designer may make his sizes different for H&M than he does for other stores too.

And only the bust needs to fit, the waist can almost always be taken in a few inches.

I find their jackets and button front shirts to run on the small side. Where I might wear a 12 in a Banana Republic jacket I'll be a 16 in an H&M one. it varies greatly though so i'd follow the suggestion about juliana taking measurements in to the store.

I wonder if any of the B'more branchs will be "selected." I'm guessing not. feh.

I agree in buying a size up. H&M seems to run a bit smaller/truer to size than Old Navy/Gap/lot of other places/labels. Seems I take a size or two up in H&M than I need over at Old Navy or the Gap, particularly for trousers.

Good luck!

My experience with the English stores is that they're all a size smaller than US sizes, at a minimum - sometimes two sizes smaller.

Why didn't you ask me directly, silly?

H&M does run a bit small, or at least *narrow* especially in shirts or other kinds of tops. The "guest designer" stuff will probably be sold in the Modern Classic deparment, though, which is sized 4 to 14, so you might be able to get a 14. If it's marketed to the young department, though, it would only run to 12, and those clothes are cut even a bit smaller (a Divided 12 fits tighter than an H&M Everyday 12, in my experience). So. I hope that helps a little.

Er, I didn't ask you directly because it didn't occur to me, 'cos I'm an addlepated flibbertigibit?

Okay, so I'll ask J. to get me a size 14. I doubt it's going to be in the young department.

I didn't mean it that way!

I hope she can get it, and get it to you quickly, and it fits. Because it really is perfect for you. It's just stupid that I won't have it in the store myself, because I could just as easily mail it. Let me know if she can't find it, though, because the Syracuse store *might* have it, and I can find out easily enough.

I know you didn't mean it that way, silly. I was mocking my complete inability to brain today.

After I get back from my next meeting, I'll check the H&M site to see if the Syracuse store will be carying the line.

I just called work. The only stores getting the line are a few in NYC, Chicago, and a few California stores. Kelly didn't know which off the top of her head, but when I mentioned the big flagship in SF, she agreed they probably would. So. Stupid stores. We don't get any of the really good stuff.

And the Madonna stuff we got this summer? NONE of it sold.
