Wittering about girly makeup stuff

The post wittering about C13 wardrobe plans has to wait until I've worked out my final list. (Yes, there is a list. Do you people have ANY IDEA the amount of clothing I am considering taking with me? Wait, you people probably do.)

The meta thinky post about the growing trend of cute skull merchandise (and [livejournal.com profile] smu, I do agree that the trend is is a modern interpretation of the memento mori, but I think there's more to it) has to wait until I have a smidge more time and brainspace, because I'd like my meta thinky post to be, oh, I don't know, ARTICULATE. Or as articulate as I can manage these days.

Besides, I'm pretty sure most of you peoples only read my LJ for the random wurbling about clothes and makeup anyway. ::wink::

- Yay, the really good sunblock that doesn't degrade in sunlight is now available in the U.S.! Except it's only available in SPF15, which means I still need to buy the really good version (SPF60, thankyouverymuch) from eBay. Bah.

- Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] water_of_fire's enthusiastic reviews and [livejournal.com profile] alexiarnps letting me try hers, I have now converted to the cult of Yves Saint Laurent Touch Eclat. Or, as I like to call it, Sleep In A Stick, because it magically makes me look well-rested. I am still wincing at the price ($38.50!), but I really do think it's worth it.

- Speaking of wincing at the price AND YSL ... they make a matching foundation. For $52. (!!!) I foolishly got a sample of it on Monday, and I fear it really is the Best Thing Ever, as [livejournal.com profile] alexiarnps warned me.

Y'see, I've been fighting with the mineral foundations for a while now. I LOVE the idea of them, but ... I don't know if it's some peculiarity of my skin, if it's my insistence on wearing sunblock, or if it's the wacked-out micro-climate of my office building, but the mineral foundations have not being behaving for over a year now. They weren't applying as smoothly or easily as I wanted, even when I used something like PhotoFinish or Erase under them. And when I'm applying makeup, I do not want to spend a lot of time fussing with my concealer or foundation. No, fussing is for eye makeup, dammit. And then by mid-day, the foundation would have gotten strangely mask-like, streaky, or super-shiny, and nothing I did really fixed properly. Considering I only wear foundation on my nose and chin, the mineral foundation was starting to become waaaaay more effort than it was worth.

So yeah, I'm trying the YSL Perfect Touch foundation, and it seems to be exactly what I wanted. Oh, as usual, dear. I'm going to give it a week or so (because the sample I got will easily last me that long), but I suspect I'm going to end up plunking down the money for it. Sweet Zombie Jesus, $52. When I break it down by daily use and how long a bottle will last me, it's not so bad. But still, $52. Yikes.

- I've come to realize that reading the Makeup Alley reviews is almost as funny as reading Fandom Wank, without quite as much head-explody. I mean, I will happily witter on about makeup, but I'm pretty sure I don't sound quite as deadly-serious as the posters on MA. And I know I'm not as trend-obsessed. My favorite comment (so far) in a review was from the woman whining that no matter how many fashion magazines she showed her husband, she couldn't get him to understand that black nail polish was Not Goth. ::blinks confusedly::Oooookaaaay, lady.

Goodness, that went on for longer than I expected. And kinda babbly. But look at it this way; since it's an LJ post, you've been spared the waving of hands and even more tangents!

I can't imagine how Anthelios is going to get SPF60 past the FDA. I'd love to see it happen, but meanwhile I'm in Zia's oil-free SPF30 from May through October. Oh, the suffering. (Zia's SPF15 from November through April. Do you know any goths who don't have this down to a science?)

Sleep In A L'il Gold Clicky Tube is where it's at, and I have no remorse for inducting you into the cult. I cringe at the price every time, but I'm never sorry I did it. I'm sort of afraid to try the full-out foundation, like I'm sort of afraid to try Nars "Angel Heart" liner.

So I love MA as much as the next femme, but I can't even begin to comment (again) on how stupid the black nail polish is Not Goth argument is . Fffff.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked NARS Angel Heart liner, but I prefer MAC's Fluidline or LiquidLast over it. The bottle design for the NARS liner meant a lot ended up going to waste.

[identity profile] water-of-fire.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I was wondering about how that gorgeous package actually works. I really love Fluidline for evening or fine-line dress-up work, but for every day I actually use L'Oreal Lineur Intense (EN GARDE, LINEUR!). Nice felt-tip thing going on and it lasts through sweaty dance class. :)

[identity profile] jonquil.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 08:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been wearing a L'Oreal non-moisturizing formula Jilli recommended; is there a non-moisturizing Anthelios?

I had my wardrobe for C13 all planned...until yesterday, when I suddenly thought, "Crap! What if it's warm that weekend?" Now I have to come up with alternative options for half of it (because I am not dedicated enough to the Victorian ideal to sweat in velvet and satin all weekend).

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
That's part of my problem, too. Time for me to pull out the summer-weight Victorian-esque lace dresses and see if there are any alterations I need to do.

[identity profile] oldhalloween.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Weather in May is always hard to call. We had 2 warm upper 70s days in a row and now we are in the 60s through Sunday. The 3 day weekend has been rained out many a year too. I use Weather Underground (http://www.wunderground.com/US/OR/Portland.html) and that link should go to a Portland zip code. On the 21st you should be able to get an accurate forecast for the week.

Dithering

[identity profile] m-cobweb.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Aaaugh. I wasn't even thinking along those lines. I think I've only got one outfit planned that would be unbearable in hot weather, though, and I could swap out the jacket for a blouse. Yeah. I could do that. I was going to bring blouses just in case, anyway...

[identity profile] caliban1227.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
But I find comfort in the waving of the hands (or maybe I'm just use to it)

My friend [livejournal.com profile] pentaclemoon got me hooked on the Bare Essentials line of mineral foundations, but only for full makeup days (like my wedding.) Most of the time, I use very light makeup, but I lurve the Lush Skin Moisturizers (http://usa.lush.com/cgi-bin/lushdb/catzoom.html?mv_arg=Moisturisers&expand=Skincare), especially the Enchanted Eye Cream and the Ultralight. The latter is also SPF 15, and if I use it under powder, the powder goes on much smoother.

Bare Essentials, however, is far too expensive for me to wear everyday. I content myself with Burts Bees products, for they do not require a trip out of my normal route to purchase.

However, I will not live without my sunscreen! I have enough freckles as it is, and with summer approaching, it will only get worse. Eeek!

[identity profile] staxxy.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I am ever on teh quest for a foundation that does not look like a mask on my face. MAC's looks DREADFUL for anything but photography (and is therefore where the one I purchased now lives).

Where did you get these samples? Nordstrom's, Macy's, or Sephora?

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Nordstrom, the downtown location. I don't know if Northgate has a YSL counter.

[identity profile] staxxy.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 07:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I dont recall if they do currently or not. They rearranged and I lost track of what all they have in there. But I will look.

[identity profile] javagoth.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
You might check out the Bon, oh excuse me - Macy's, if Nordstrom doesn't have it. Sometimes they have slightly different lines.

I've been pretty happy with Prescriptives foundations - which is at the Bon rather than Nordstrom last I checked... I have really sensitive skin and it doesn't make me break out...

I need to do some experimenting with the Bare Essentials stuff I have but the first time I tried it - it seemed to turn my face yellow. Yellow is not a good color on me...

[identity profile] javagoth.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you people have ANY IDEA the amount of clothing I am considering taking with me? Wait, you people probably do.

I'm glad the friends I'm carpooling with have an SUV. I don't have the selection of clothes you have but what I have is bulky and I'm probably going to bring a lot because I keep flip-flopping on what to wear. I really don't have anything victorian though - alas...

[identity profile] sistawendy.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Mineral foundation, namely Aromaleigh, has never worked for me at all. The color changes when I apply it, and it gets really cakey. I'm chalking that up to testosterone poisoning.

No, it's not just the Y in your "makeup"

[identity profile] cryfordawn.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I've found that the mineral foundation I've tried gets cakey/flakey too. :P

I use Bare Escentuals "Mineral Veil" all over my face, every day, and I've never had any issues with it . . . but it's a powder, not a liquid foundation. Which type are you guys using?

I'm using powder too. I think it's a less fancy brand, though....maybe Physician's Formula?

Sunscreen

[identity profile] cryfordawn.livejournal.com 2007-05-09 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Is your preferred sunscreen for facial use? I've been having a hellish time trying to find high SPF that works for my face. I have dry (esp on my cheeks!) sort of senstive skin. Reommendations for something with good SPF that is also a long lasting moisterizer but not greasy/goopy?

[identity profile] martygreene.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 02:32 am (UTC)(link)
YSL's Touche Eclat is one of the staples in my kit, especially for bridal/special event clients. They're always amazed.

Similarly useful, and with a slightly heavier coverage is MUFE's lift concealer. I use this almost as much if not equally as much as the YSL.
