Wittering about girly makeup stuff
The post wittering about C13 wardrobe plans has to wait until I've worked out my final list. (Yes, there is a list. Do you people have ANY IDEA the amount of clothing I am considering taking with me? Wait, you people probably do.)
The meta thinky post about the growing trend of cute skull merchandise (and
smu, I do agree that the trend is is a modern interpretation of the memento mori, but I think there's more to it) has to wait until I have a smidge more time and brainspace, because I'd like my meta thinky post to be, oh, I don't know, ARTICULATE. Or as articulate as I can manage these days.
Besides, I'm pretty sure most of you peoples only read my LJ for the random wurbling about clothes and makeup anyway. ::wink::
- Yay, the really good sunblock that doesn't degrade in sunlight is now available in the U.S.! Except it's only available in SPF15, which means I still need to buy the really good version (SPF60, thankyouverymuch) from eBay. Bah.
- Thanks to
water_of_fire's enthusiastic reviews and
alexiarnps letting me try hers, I have now converted to the cult of Yves Saint Laurent Touch Eclat. Or, as I like to call it, Sleep In A Stick, because it magically makes me look well-rested. I am still wincing at the price ($38.50!), but I really do think it's worth it.
- Speaking of wincing at the price AND YSL ... they make a matching foundation. For $52. (!!!) I foolishly got a sample of it on Monday, and I fear it really is the Best Thing Ever, as
alexiarnps warned me.
Y'see, I've been fighting with the mineral foundations for a while now. I LOVE the idea of them, but ... I don't know if it's some peculiarity of my skin, if it's my insistence on wearing sunblock, or if it's the wacked-out micro-climate of my office building, but the mineral foundations have not being behaving for over a year now. They weren't applying as smoothly or easily as I wanted, even when I used something like PhotoFinish or Erase under them. And when I'm applying makeup, I do not want to spend a lot of time fussing with my concealer or foundation. No, fussing is for eye makeup, dammit. And then by mid-day, the foundation would have gotten strangely mask-like, streaky, or super-shiny, and nothing I did really fixed properly. Considering I only wear foundation on my nose and chin, the mineral foundation was starting to become waaaaay more effort than it was worth.
So yeah, I'm trying the YSL Perfect Touch foundation, and it seems to be exactly what I wanted. Oh, as usual, dear. I'm going to give it a week or so (because the sample I got will easily last me that long), but I suspect I'm going to end up plunking down the money for it. Sweet Zombie Jesus, $52. When I break it down by daily use and how long a bottle will last me, it's not so bad. But still, $52. Yikes.
- I've come to realize that reading the Makeup Alley reviews is almost as funny as reading Fandom Wank, without quite as much head-explody. I mean, I will happily witter on about makeup, but I'm pretty sure I don't sound quite as deadly-serious as the posters on MA. And I know I'm not as trend-obsessed. My favorite comment (so far) in a review was from the woman whining that no matter how many fashion magazines she showed her husband, she couldn't get him to understand that black nail polish was Not Goth. ::blinks confusedly::Oooookaaaay, lady.
Goodness, that went on for longer than I expected. And kinda babbly. But look at it this way; since it's an LJ post, you've been spared the waving of hands and even more tangents!

Sleep In A L'il Gold Clicky Tube is where it's at, and I have no remorse for inducting you into the cult. I cringe at the price every time, but I'm never sorry I did it. I'm sort of afraid to try the full-out foundation, like I'm sort of afraid to try Nars "Angel Heart" liner.
So I love MA as much as the next femme, but I can't even begin to comment (again) on how stupid the black nail polish is Not Goth argument is . Fffff.

Bare Essentials, however, is far too expensive for me to wear everyday. I content myself with Burts Bees products, for they do not require a trip out of my normal route to purchase.
However, I will not live without my sunscreen! I have enough freckles as it is, and with summer approaching, it will only get worse. Eeek!

Where did you get these samples? Nordstrom's, Macy's, or Sephora?

I've been pretty happy with Prescriptives foundations - which is at the Bon rather than Nordstrom last I checked... I have really sensitive skin and it doesn't make me break out...
I need to do some experimenting with the Bare Essentials stuff I have but the first time I tried it - it seemed to turn my face yellow. Yellow is not a good color on me...

I'm glad the friends I'm carpooling with have an SUV. I don't have the selection of clothes you have but what I have is bulky and I'm probably going to bring a lot because I keep flip-flopping on what to wear. I really don't have anything victorian though - alas...

No, it's not just the Y in your "makeup"

Similarly useful, and with a slightly heavier coverage is MUFE's lift concealer. I use this almost as much if not equally as much as the YSL.
