Things. Stuff!

- Thing One: I have found someplace that sells straw versions of my usual black wool top hat. I am thinking of getting one, covering it with black lace, and then I would finally have a summer version of my hat.

- Thing Two: We never managed to see Sucker Punch in the theatre, but thanks to a video that scrolled by on Tumblr, I spent part of today browsing YouTube so I could listen to the soundtrack. Which I then bought. A remix of Bjork's "Army of Me" with Skunk Anansi! The cover of "Sweet Dreams Are Made of This"! The cover of "Asleep"! This thing is full of bombastic/crazy girl fun.

- Thing Three: A sign of how stressful and scattered this year has been: I had no idea that book 8 of the Vampire Kisses series had been released! My favorite sugary dark reading indulgence! ::flailyhands::

- Thing Four: A picture Libby (from Exoskeleton Cabaret, you know, Libby Bulloff) took of me during yesterday's trip to the zoo.

- Thing Five: There have been some great non-supernatural Gothic fiction suggestions arriving in the GCS mailbox. Someone made the very good point that all of Anne Rice's recent books are about, well, Jesus. I'm betting her (overwrought, bombastic, but cracktastic fun) writing style hasn't changed that much, even if she isn't writing about vampires anymore. However, I will admit that the suggestion of Flowers In the Attic made me raise my eyebrows. Sure, there's no hint of supernatural in it, and it IS a modern take on classic Gothic novel tropes, but ... yeah. I don't know if I'd feel comfortable recommending it.

(I occasionally pick up copies of it at thrift stores, flip through them in a state of mesmerized horror, and then decide that I don't need to take the revisiting the trashy reading habits of my youth THAT far.)

There's actually two versions (http://stores.lostcoasthistorical.com/-strse-Hats/searchpath/104175825/start/11/total/19/Categories.bok) of the straw top hat, one slightly taller & one lower. This vendor has gone to Bay Area cons & events, so I've seen them & the hats are quite nice.

Flowers wasn't so bad, at least there was some originality there - the worst bit is the formulaic series that have been ghost-written after VA's death, which make me want to shout something along the lines of 'just shag your brother already so we can get to the actual story'. Except often it *is* the actual story...

Speaking of which, I forgot to mention that "Frankenstein" and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (I believe) are science, not supernatural, despite being all Uber. And if the young lady approves of Poe, they should really be no trouble.

Where did you find the straw hats? I could use a couple of those.

Duh, read comments first. I'm a dork.

The last time I saw a straw top hat was on David Niven's head in Around the World in 80 Days! Thank you for sharing the link; it's been next to impossible to find one.

I'd vote against Flowers, at least in this young lady's case. Quite apart from the the obvious reasons, as a Christian I can say that there's nothing to make the blood boil like reading about people misusing the Bible to hurt others, and that's... not real conducive to pleasure reading. My .02.

I wish I had some real recs for you, but I'm drawing a blank at the moment... I assume she's got all the classics covered... historical mystery novels, perhaps?
