Upcoming events! And lipstick reviews.

Events!

THIS Saturday, October 17th, I will be signing from 2 - 5 PM at Comics Dungeon in Wallingford!

On Sunday, October 18th, I will be scampering around the Mourning Market. The plan is to do some filming to use in the next Gothic Charm School video, but my ulterior motive is to browse the dark and spooky wares for sale and support my friends who are vending there.

Now, onto the lipstick reviews!

Hey, have you noticed? The harder-edged/punk side of Goth is a big deal in the fashion world this autumn. No, really. Which amuses me no end, even if my preference is for the more Victorian side of Goth. MAC's take on this is the StyleBlack collection. I, being a complete push-over for this sort of thing, ended up getting the Mattene lipstick in Midnight Media, and Glimmerglass glosses in Blackfire and Blackware.

Midnight Media: a nicely-pigmented black lipstick. It feels creamier and more moisturizing than other MAC Mattenes (Bing, I'm looking at you), and it's fairly long-lasting. The color is buildable; the first coat does go on as black instead of grey (thank goodness!), but you'll get an, er, darker black if you apply more coats.

Blackfire: a "black" gloss with red/pink shimmer. "Black" is in quotes there because it applies as a sheer black/grey. The shimmer definitely shows up, and doesn't have a texture to it. You won't feel like you've spackled your lips with this stuff.

Blackware: another "black" gloss, which applies as a sheer black/grey.

I'm betting most people (who aren't Goths) will use Blackfire or Blackware as a way to deepen a different color lipstick. (I saw someone on Makeup Alley say that they thought Blackfire would look good over a candy-pink lipstick. My reaction to that was "Huh?") I've tried both of these Glimmerglasses over MAC's Nightmoth liner, which resulted in a great dark blackened wine color.

However, the Glimmerglasses are a pain for upkeep. In all fairness, I find ALL lipgloss products to be a pain for upkeep, because no matter how carefully I apply lipliner, the gloss eventually feathers and bleeds outside of my lipline. Which looks even worse if you're using a black gloss. So! I will only be using the Blackfire and Blackware Glimmerglasses when I am prepared to check on my lip color every half hour or so.

Now, I know a lot of people hold the opinion that black lip color is a babybat thing, and that Grown-Up Goths shouldn't go near it. Bah, I say. BAH. In my opinion, the key to being an ElderGoth and indulging in black lipstick is, just like with all things Goth-fashion related, to make sure YOU are wearing IT, and not the other way around. Don't go all-out with Spooky Dark Eye makeup AND black lipstick, it will make you look like you're trying too hard to present yourself as a Dark And Mysterious Creature Of The Night.

I've been wearing black lipstick paired with my usual eye makeup (ivory all over the lid, a burgundy/purple color lightly smudged at the outer corners and the crease, a pale shimmery pink in the center (MAC Mylar, Sketch, and Sweetlust, respectively), black liquid liner, and black mascara), and I think it looks great. So to all the other ElderGoths I say: it is time for us to take back the black lipstick from the Bad Gawfick Cliché file!

the lipstick review might go well on GCS, sweetie.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 09:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh don't worry, I'm planning on including this in the next column.

[identity profile] poh.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
My lips are too full for black lipstick. When I tried it a couple times, I just ended up looking like I was a mouth-breather.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 09:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, I wonder how you'd look in the sheer black lipglosses? Next time I see you, I may pull one of them out of my purse and menace you with it. :)

[identity profile] poh.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooooooooooooooo! Threats are promises, y'know. :D

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, my spooky little eclair, I do know. :D

[identity profile] girlgoth.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Once they can make black in the 'Lipfinity'/'Outlast' style, I'll go for it, but until then, I'll keep using it only for photos, not real life. ;) I'm so spoiled.

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
OK - Mourning Market sounds like a lot of fun. I may even show up! And not wear colors!

[identity profile] marchwarden23.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes! It is also on a day that I could possibly make it there!

We should team up in bright orange and reflective tape.

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Jesus God hell yes.

And then have coffee.

[identity profile] marchwarden23.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 01:07 am (UTC)(link)
Given my normal operating hours, I'll probably be there later than earlier and coffee will most certainly be a good idea. Oh yes.

Depending how cold it is, I might even wear the Furry Head Eating Hat.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I realize I should be Full Of Fear at the plan you two are hatching, and yet I'm not. Instead I'm giggling.

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
The Pink Docs shall make an appearance.

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2009-10-16 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
So, let's get this party started.

When and where do you want to meet?

[identity profile] marchwarden23.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Alas, I was asked to work OT. No fun times for me, but boy does misery pay well. We should still hang out soon, though. A friend of mine just bought into a music store that has quite possibly the best metal section in Seattle. Ballard, next to the chai house, right on the #75. Music and caffiene right next to each other. A plan for the future?

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2009-10-17 03:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I k now that store. It's a good store. And yes! Caffeine!

[identity profile] alibaster.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 10:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the review. Any chance of getting some photos of the results for those of us who might not be able to test the products in person : )

[identity profile] a-papier-mache.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
I second this!

[identity profile] caleidescopeyes.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm interested to know how the Midnight Media looks with a smidge of the Blackfire layered over it. My guess is that it would be dramatic enough to perhaps be a good nighttime look.

[identity profile] semy-of-pearls.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm... I'll have to check the Midnight Media. I'm not really fond of 'shiny' lip gloss, so a matte black is more my thing.

it's nice to know other goths believe in black lipstick. It can look good on people as long as it's not over done :)

[identity profile] mimi-monsterr.livejournal.com 2009-10-12 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
ooo Mourning Market sounds fun, I wish that there was more things like that here in the UK!

[identity profile] noxenlux.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I'll be VENDING! I'll have lots of goodies..

Loads of hats and perfumes!

:D

[identity profile] embers-of-jade.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
I bet the black looks good on you. That's another thing...make sure it's your color!! :-) Have fun with your scampering!!

[identity profile] mimimanderly.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
I was fortunate enough to be in Macy's at the exact moment that they were unpacking a new shipment at the Chanel counter, which included -- yes, you guessed it -- a black lipstick in their Rouge Allure line called Hysteria. Urban Decay also makes a quite fetching black gloss with subtle glimmer in it called Oil Slick.

[identity profile] gothic-lolita.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
I ordered the Black Knight regular lipstick for the sake of collecting it, but after reading your entry I might try wearing it for real! :D

[identity profile] pandorasbox.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I love mac make-up but the new Black Style line had me a little scared.

[identity profile] lilith925.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
*Mumbles* Still makes my mouth disappear...

[identity profile] satellite6.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
Enjoyed these reviews. I'm one of the people you mentioned, who would put the black gloss over another color. :) I think YSL has a similar black color in a gloss last year. It got to be almost "mainstream" popular, too. I kept meaning to get it to put over my blood red lipstick.

[identity profile] loree.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Are you a fan of Chanel at all? They've got a line of black-toned glosses, lipsticks, and nail colors this fall. Nothing in a true black, but I picked up a tube of their violet the other day that is just lovely.

[identity profile] indilwen.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
I have always loved black lipstick, and I am really glad to see quality black lip colors coming out, even if they are insanely expensive! As long as it's carefully applied, I think it looks wonderful.

[identity profile] dizzy88.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 05:36 am (UTC)(link)
Could I get the suit from you this weekend?

[identity profile] lorelei-mayrose.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 09:42 am (UTC)(link)
Do you know about Lime Crime's black lipstick (Styletto)? I definitely want to give it a try soon.

I love it when MUA gets its hot little mitts on products clearly meant for, y'know, us: "This isn't even excessively goth" or "I don't feel like queen of the goths when I have this on."

To which I am only barely just nice enough to not respond, "Tell it to your non-goth Chanel Black Satin nail polish."

[identity profile] water-of-fire.livejournal.com 2009-10-24 04:37 pm (UTC)(link)
In other news, I am a sucker: I just eBayed the Mattene lipstick in "Night Violet," as it is sold out everywhere.

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-10-24 07:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It is? Wacky, I tell you. I'm glad I snagged a tube of it when I went into the MAC store for the ogling of the Style Black line.

[identity profile] nelsolidarida.livejournal.com 2009-10-13 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you tried Urban Decay's new sheer black lippy?

[identity profile] schmi.livejournal.com 2009-10-14 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey lady, reminder to come up pick up your stuff from my place. :P Or should I pass it on to Elana or something if you might be running into her sooner?

[identity profile] cupcake-goth.livejournal.com 2009-10-14 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah-ha! Um, pass it on to Elana, as my schedule has not stopped being kind of nutty.

[identity profile] schmi.livejournal.com 2009-10-15 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Will do.
