Sleeeeep. And a video and some pictures!
The reading at the Bellevue Library was a lot of fun! Thank you to everyone who attended, it was lovely to see you there. Lisa the organizer recorded an audio interview with me before the event, and when that is available on the library website, I'll link to it.
Hey, speaking of links! Remember how I posted on Saturday night that I was going to be on QueenieTV on ustream.com? 73 minutes of giggling and general hijinks, featuring
queeniex and myself, can be viewed right here. (clicky-link!) I adore Queenie to bits, and wish we could hang out more often.
I slept in today. I slept for something like 11 hours, and it was GLORIOUS. Today is going to be filled with exciting things like laundry, and reassuring the cats I still love them. In other words, a muchly-needed low-key day.
Here, have two pictures from the book tour. Oooh, and if you have photos, please send them to me!

You know, Miss Jilli, as I left for Burlingame I posted to my Twitter, "this might be the last time I goth up. I'm so tired." I've gotten so jaded about it, so TIRED. Just weary. And then I got there, and met some lovely, lovely people, and saw other lovely, lovely people I already knew, and I'm so in love with the book... I'm finding my faith in my cherished subculture reaffirmed. I think I can go on carrying the big, black, bat-festooned flag after all.
I need to find a way to mentally separate goth culture from the club scene -- it's not goth or being goth that I'm tired of, it's associating myself with a nightclub culture that, at least in San Francisco, has become the sort of thing that eats its young. I'm glad you're here, I'm glad I'm here, and I'm glad we were all in Burlingame on Friday night.
And this comment sounds kinda gushy and fangirly, but I'm okay with that. :)

Tell you what. I plan to re-animate the Black Valentine's party this coming February. I've held it outside and at DunDraCon, and both work nicely. This time, I'll have tea and scones ready, not to mention my own Dorothy Parker book.
In the meantime, I'm terribly exited about making my own clothes again and doing it RIGHT this time!

The goth culture, in many ways, NEEDS to be separated from the club culture. I mean, don't get me wrong, I adore my Saturday nights at the gothy club, but that's because I'm lucky enough to have a very good, friendly club to go to. Death Guild, in many ways, sounds like ... well, like something designed to chew people up.
But YES, you can be a goth and just ignore the club culture. Be who you want, like what you want, and if that involves you looking at the club scene and going "No thanks, I don't need that", then rock on.
It was so wonderful to finally meet you in the flesh! You are exactly like I pictured. :)
(oooh, give me the link to the best hoodie ever!)

I smell the makings of a Lesson.

between that and something on the joys of Corp Goth life...

You mean she looks like her icon?!

So the lesson here is... we should all go up to Seattle and experience the club scene, then etch out a corner of the Bay Area and create a new one? :)

I think my problem with the SF goth scene is totally solipsistic -- it makes me lonely, it leaves me cold, it's not what it was when I loved it! There's this disconnect between goths and dark culture in the Bay Area -- you see all of, oh, three really pretty, swirly gofficks at any given club night here and the rest is... sigh. You know. I can't even get into it. I wear BDUs to blend in and then I feel like I'm misrepresenting myself. I worry about kidlets getting into the Death Guild scene now, primarily because Guild has been around so very long and is still run by the same people who put it on in the first place -- we're planning our eighteenth anniversary party, which is only two years away, and it wigs us all right the hell out that there'll be people there who hadn't been born when we opened our doors. Ack. I know one girl on staff there in whom I see so much of myself at her age it's terrifying -- she's sensitive and sweet and I want to go, "Run! Run! This will eat you alive!" But she needs to learn her own lessons. And mark my words, it'll eat her alive.
(Am I being really fatalistic today? Post forthcoming on the subject.)
Oh yes, the ultimate hoodie: Ayya's Inanna Coat (edited to add that that's a clicky link)! It's perfect, I love it. The only caveat is that the sizing is screwy -- mine is an extra large, and I'm a medium in everything else in the world. Eek, I should have had you try mine on.

I think the thing is I enjoyed Death Guild for, oh, fourteen years -- it's pure, simple contempt born of familiarity that makes me avoid it now. I'll still go occasionally to rub up against all my favorite bouncers and dance to a little oontz-oontz techno, but maaaaaan, forgive me my OldGoth[tm] moment, but the club scene in the Bay Area can't hold a candle to what it was when I was a little bat. This isn't to say that I don't want *you* to enjoy it -- believe me, I do. I pledge allegiance to David and all the old-school Death Guild crowd and I love that it's still fresh for other people. Please, go and love it for me. :)
