A shallow but important question

Should I purchase duplicates of the 4 MAC shadows* I use the most and build a palette for traveling? So that I don't need to worry about shuffling it from one makeup bag to the other?

On the one hand, I AM doing a lot of traveling in the near future.

On the other hand, do I NEED duplicates of 4 eye shadows? Even if I wear them almost every day?

Dear LJ Hivemind, please give me advice!

*Mylar, Sketch, Sweet Lust, and Forgery. None of them limited edition colors, thank goodness.

yes, you absolutely should.

a) it means you can have the palette in both places without WORRY (yay something you don't have to worry about!)

b) color get discontinued all the time. stocking up when you have the perfect shades is *never* bad planning.

c) did I mention the "one less thing for you to fret about?" I know how panicked you would be if you got to a signing location (like... NY) and had missed packing the palette, and had *no time* to go get any or a quick "do" at the MAC store. So yeah, see a).

and... why is this a question?

If you will go through them all in six months or less, get the duplicates. If you will go through enough of them to make it worth the money when you throw out the remainder in six months, get the duplicates.

I totally say yes. Makes life SO much easier. I used to keep duplicates in my gym bag and my house kit when I was at the gym everyday.

I wouldn't. You're not going to buy a travel set of every single thing you might bring with you, so you'll always need to pack before a trip anyway, and eye shadows are easy enough to toss in a bag. If you really are traveling so frequently for a while that you need to keep basics packed all the time, then get in the habit of keeping your travel makeup bag on your vanity table and use it that way to keep it together.

Yes and save the receipt slip as its a business expense for next years taxies.
We gave one dancer a 500$ write off dew to the makeup she needed for her work.
You need this stuff for your work pushing the book so there for it is kosher to do.

[identity profile] smu.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
I would. Just in case you're traveling and you somehow lose them or your baggage (though I bet you're smart enough to put essential makeup in your carryon!). Also, hello, new MAC eyeshadow! I was naughty and bought two new ones last week, Twinks and Paradisco. Now, if I only got into the habit of daily makeup D:

[identity profile] fiorituranotte.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Get them. It will make travelling so less stressful to have a bag of essentials ready to go.

I resisted having a special travel toiletry and makeup set for a long time. Then came the year that I stayed in hotels or other people's houses almost more than I did my own. It's just easier to leave everything packed. I even have travel prescription meds, so I don't run the risk of either forgetting them or leaving them somewhere.

[identity profile] ex-fashioni.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. And also make up a travel bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, makeup remover (the wipes are awesome for this)-- basically, anything you'd have to take off your vanity or makeup table, get duplicates/travel sizes-- also a small bottle with a variety of OTC pain-relievers if you use them is good.

I say go for it.

I got duplicates of some of my favorite eyeshadows to keep in my work bag, for the rare occasions when I go to happy hour after work and want to spruce up a bit. It is handy - but bear in mind (a) most of mine come from Everyday Minerals, so it's not nearly the same expenditure that MAC would be, and (b) I don't throw out makeup within the recommended timeframe (except mascara... I use all loose-powder minerals, clean my brushes often, and have never had a problem). So... I say if the price is worth the convenience, go for it! I tend to be a bit flaky and forgetful when packing, so I might be a bit biased in that respect.

Yes! I have found that one of the things that makes my life easier is having everything I need in the places I need it to be without having to move shit around or *remember* to move shit around. You don't talk yourself out of buying a hairbrush for your purse because you already have one in the bathroom, right?

[identity profile] sistawendy.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
That kind of convenience is worth some money; even I can relate to that. The question is how much money you've got.

I have to admit, I would. Having travel versions of toiletries has made my traveling much less fraught.

Joining the chorus of yeses, for all the reasons previously listed. Plus it sounds like a glam thing to do and that can't be bad.

A couple years ago, I decided to bite the bullet and create a travel toiletry bag that included small sizes of everything I needed (favorite face moisturizer, eye drops, etc) so that I could just grab it and go. It felt sort of silly to do, but I love being able to just toss it in my suitcase and know it's all there.

I'd definitely get the 4 dupes - 1st, you'll use them up and need them again anyway and 2nd, not having to repack makeup to go on the road is worth it's weight in "less crap to deal with" - especially as you're going to be on the road a lot in the near future ;>.

Go for it!

We didn't get a chance to chat last night, but I found a place with everything we need to make all of our own and even press our own blends.

But the short answer is "yes". And I have several fairly new, if not new, pots of Sketch you can have. And a few extra four pot palettes.

Also, if you want to do a case hack I have everything here. The best set of mini brushes I have found comes from Sonia Kushuk at Target. I hacked the case they come in and have a mini version of everything I wear everyday in my day bag. I also have duplicated of most things that can be found in smaller sizes in my travel case already.

This is my most recent case hack:

Top to Bottom, Left to Right:
Cream Liner
Eyebrows
Ivory Shimmer
Medium Taupe Shimmer
Blush
Eyebrow brush
Sponge brush
Flat eyeliner brush
Blush brush
Tube w/ Dermablend
Mascara

There is a glassine sheet to go between the layers to keep it clean. This is about the size of a business card case.

Yes. Also, I LOVE THAT SONG.

[identity profile] brumbjorn.livejournal.com 2009-06-09 05:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I probably would since it can be a hassle to pop the pans out of the palletes sometimes. If you use these colors all the time, having a second set is probably a Good Thing. The pans wear down and when they do, I find they break (and by break I mean shatter-into-a-million-pieces-and-get-eyeshadow -over-everything-in-the-bag break) much easier in travel. The travel set would have less wear and be less likely to break IMHO. and besides, you'll probably use it all up anyway.

I just dug through the big pile-o-Mac I need to get rid of and I have a BNIB Sweet Lust you can have. I also probably have enough of the depotted empties I promised you for you to get the other three.

**adds more stuff to the "I need to see Jilli" pile**

I almost forgot! The reason I wandered over here! I saw this, squeed, and thought of you immediately!

Yes.

I've dealt with this, and trying to shuffle and remember every single time inevitably leads to failure.

You will be much happier if you do buy the duplicates.

I have this clinique shadow I use every day with a few other colors and then as a touch-up throughout the day, and I have two -- one for my bathroom and one for my purse, because otherwise I'd lose it. So I say yes.
