Ridiculous fashion cravings, part something something

Long, full black skirts with sequins/beading/embroidery. You know, the sort that SOME of us would purchase at the Indian import stores in the University District or Pike Place Market.

In other words, I want back some of the skirts I had in the 90s. Which are shockingly hard to find on eBay/Etsy, and involve using search keywords that are actually slurs, but clueless sellers still use as a description.

I can blame part of this craving on Jupiter Ascending. Funeral sparkle! Black sequin accents on everything! But I suspect some of this craving also comes from discussing upper-class witch fashion in the Harry Potter 'verse with [Bad username or unknown identity: thatyourefuse"]. Dense black-on-black embroidery. Subtle beaded charms sewn into clothing. Yes. I want this.

So! Anyone have suggestions of where else I can look for these skirts?

Pike Place still springs to mind, actually. There are a number of bellydance & SE Asia clothing stores in the immediate vicinity there. The main floor of the sound end had a good silk store, last time I checked, and there are a few shops between 1st & Stewart and 2nd & Pike (in that few block area). Plus, you can stop by the pimp store, where you might find some good jackets, while they are mostly for men, I bed they can be tailored for curves.

and also... my own fashion craving of late is for black poodle skirts with sparkly spider web & line to a spider instead of the poodly and leash of the originals.

I think [livejournal.com profile] angldst may have made something like that, once upon a time -- and could probably be induced to do so again :)

I suspect that the inducing would require cash, which I have in extremely short supply, alas.

Now I want to make a new lace skirt & bead it myself. Of course I tend to go with something more exotic than jet to match my personal colour scheme. ;-)

I have not seen those styles anywhere lately, but Recollections has some (http://recollections.biz/victorian/50201.html) lovely (http://recollections.biz/victorian/140878.html) Victorian (http://recollections.biz/victorian/80219r.html) styles dripping with jet beads.

My son has been reading Harry Potter for the first time (he's 11, and just finished Order of the Phoenix). I've been listening to the audiobooks while I do housework. I've been reading some of the stuff on Facebook, on one of the Harry Potter fangroups. I'm, yes, jonesing for HP cosplay/wear.

Those skirts required extra care so I'm guessing not many survived. Its been hard to find any decent broomstick skirts. The niece likes hippy patchwork skirts and Goodwill has been failing at those lately too. Will add to my quest list and let you know if I find anything. :o )

I've been looking for the same thing too with summertime coming up. There are some on ebay but most of them have gold/bronze beading which is just.....a no for me.

I would dearly love to hear your thoughts on Jupiter Ascending.

I wrote a HUGE thing about it over on Tumblr: http://gothiccharmschool.tumblr.com/post/112080882770/jupiter-ascending-more-than-sequins-in-space

The short form is: holy crap, it's a Regency Romance Space Opera! This is not about the traditional Hero's Journey! OH MY G-D I LOVE IT.

That is an amazing breakdown, and also I should probably read more regency romance.

Beyond the fabulous sparkles, etc, I have to say that I loved the choice Jupiter makes at the end of the movie-- usually when villains threaten the hero's loved ones, movies picture them caving until something manages to save everyone at the last second, because love the most important thing, etc. I thought it was really interesting that they had Jupiter deliberately choose to sacrifice her family (and herself) to save the world.

I too miss 1990s Indian goth-friendly skirts. The store I used to buy them at here on the east coast also shut down. If anyone finds a good and well priced online source - I'd be grateful!
