Tales from my workplace, the never-ending story

Today I walked out of my building (to go to the building across the street that has the good Mexican food in their cafeteria), and was greeted by the sound of ... bagpipes. The really surreal part? Wondering if the bagpipes were being played by a guy I once worked with who kept his set of bagpipes in his office.

Bagpipes.

---

Dear Female Co-Worker I saw in the cafeteria,

Yes yes, my wardrobe is very confusing to you. However, I am as equally confused as to why you thought that a denim micro micro-mini (with a ragged, "distressed" hem), a white almost-but-not-quite sheer sleeveless blouse, and black patent 4" spike-heeled sandals are appropriate to wear to work. Even at a place with no dress code.

(Seriously, what she was wearing would be fine if she was going out clubbing and looking to hook up. I dunno, maybe I'm being unreasonable. But damn that was a short skirt. With raggedy strings hanging from the hem.)

---

EDITED TO ADD: Oh dear. According to some mainstream fashion magazines, grunge is coming back as part of the 90s nostalgia wave. No. No, thank you very much.

:D

I'll be in style again!

(Hey - at least I tuck my t-shirts in.)

Me too! Heh!

OK I admit I actually have several styles of clothes in my closet and 3 dressers... But still!

You know, Nibs & I are constantly arguing about the limits of what's appropriate to wear where. Typically I argue for looser limits, but the limits still need to exist if only to keep the forks out of our eyes. I hope micro-mini girl is young enough a) not to have had this explained to her, and b) to at least not look ghastly in her outfit.

Grunge wasn't really much of a fashion movement. It introduced the mainstream to thrift stores, though, to the detriment of the rest of us thrift store shoppers.

I have decided that cleavage, nipples of any sort and any skirt or shorts that show above that curve of your butt cheeks are inappropriate for anywhere calling itself an office. Last I checked, strip clubs and charlotte russe were not called offices. ;)

I knew it! Thank God I kept my flannel shirts.

[identity profile] water-of-fire.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
No. No grunge. No '90s. No. I refuse.

[identity profile] icprncs.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 08:00 pm (UTC)(link)
*sigh*

If we're going to bring back utterly pointless trends, I'd like to vote for Oxford bags and flapping galoshes.

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
What is an Oxford bag?

[identity profile] icprncs.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Gigantic pants that were popular in the 1920s.

There is always Google for such questions. :)

[identity profile] bork.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah - but you're more fun!

[identity profile] icprncs.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Heh. Today, my mood looks a lot like your icon, and you're the third person who's asked me something that was easily searchable. Were I not very conscientious about needlessly pissing off my friends, I might have been a very different kind of "fun." :P

It's like watching a very large wave coming at you. You know it will kill you. It comes in slowly but you can't get away in time. It's terrible and you know there's nothing you can do about it.

ETA: What in the hell are people nostalgic for the 90s for? I mean, sure, Bowie's last good albums came out then, but nothing else really comes to mind.

Peace & good government? Legal MDMA?

[identity profile] poh.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:56 pm (UTC)(link)
What is this good government you speak of?

I thought MDMA was put on the BAAAAD list back around '86?

Peace? For who?

[identity profile] sistawendy.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Relatively good. The Current Occupant makes a large majority of his predecessors look good.

Hmm. I admit I'm a little fuzzy on when MDMA was banned, but I hear quality was much higher back in the day.

Peace (well, post Gulf War 1) for us & the Iraqis, mainly.

Ohhh, but like diamonds, shitty presidents are timeless.

:C

Or terrorism being viewed as a law-enforcement issue rather than The Most Pressing Problem In Our Time.

That's a good question. For me, I'm nostalgic for the early 90s when Seattle had a thriving industrial culture. Paul was bringing lots of good shows to Colourbox. COCA was putting on some amazing installations in their old space, which is now the Lusty Lady. We had Steve Stokes and Record Gallery, which was one of the best places to hang out and learn about new music. We had fantastic releases from Front 242 - don't forget the Tyranny For You show at the Moore in '91 - and Front Line Assembly. SRL came to town and tore it up in SODO. Those were really great years in this town, and we'll never have anything like them ever again.

Gaw, and Pulp did have their best albums come out then too. Dagnabit.

Well, compared to 99.98% of the dreck from the 80s, and 100% of the dreck from the 70s, the 90s were a watershed.

Plus, the decade I discovered my own taste in music (even though I dont really listen to any of it anymore), the first years on my own, etc, etc. all mean I don't dread a 90s retro faze.

I'm just pissed I've not seen Hammer Pants come back into fashion so I can point and laugh at the morons wearing them.

[identity profile] poh.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's where I cut my teeth too. I just know that the good stuff is going to be revived. Shit's buoyancy properties will be revealed once again...

[identity profile] schmi.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Alice in Chains? Stone Temple Pilots? Pearl Jam?

What's with the 90s hating? :P

[identity profile] smu.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Grunge? Really? Well... maybe I'll be able to pick up some comfy sweaters that aren't already "pre-shrunk" with three quarter sleeves and make me look like I have gigantic boobs...

[identity profile] staxxy.livejournal.com 2008-07-15 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
BWHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

That means that all those horrid little fashion clones will be rushing out to buy FLANNEL in the MIDDLE OF SUMMER!!!!!!

The bagpipes make me so very happy!

The thought of the co-worker's choice of work attire causes me great concern. Where is a fashion intervention when it is seriously in need?
Club? fine
Hook up? perfect
Work? I'm struggling (it did make for an interesting mental image, though)

I think I shall pass on grunge this time as well, thank you very much.

[identity profile] mojrim.livejournal.com 2008-07-16 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
The 90's? Already? WTFO? I mean, they sucked a mere 15 years ago, have people forgotten so quickly? Maybe I'll just stay here and take up that warlord position I've been offered.

[identity profile] mrs-batman.livejournal.com 2008-07-17 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
90's nostalgia wave? Good grief! This is the first I've heard of this. And sparing all nostalgia for "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," I strongly disapprove.
