[Personal] Oh right, it's national Coming Out Day

For the record, I'm heterosexual. I'm married and monogamous (and coming up on our 10th wedding anniversary this month).

I don't care what gender you are or want to be. I don't care who turns you on. I DO care that everyone is treated the same, has the same rights, and doesn't have to deal with bigotry, hatred, and violence.

From Pam at Pandagon, who has very good points: If you are straight and an ally, COME OUT. Support your gay friends and loved ones when you hear intolerant conversation, politely engage ignorance with information.

For my straight readers: – are you “out” as an ally? – are you able to talk about gay friends or relatives with others? – are you comfortable shooting down homophobes when they spout off during a conversation?

"are you “out” as an ally?" -- now that's a lovely way to put it.

Hurrah for you!!! I am most definately out as an ally...hell, I'm Dotor Who fan, it's run by the self-named Gay Mafia...

I don't know if there's the same trend in thr US, but kids here are currently using 'gay' in general slang to mean 'dumb' or 'stupid', such as 'oh, that's so

Hurrah for you!!! I am most definately out as an ally...hell, I'm Dotor Who fan, it's run by the self-named Gay Mafia...

I don't know if there's the same trend in thr US, but kids here are currently using 'gay' in general slang to mean 'dumb' or 'stupid', such as 'oh, that's so <igay</i>' as a term of derision. I HATE this! My nephew has met our dear friends Nick and Barney who are the people inside the Daleks - yes the Daleks, toughest badasses in the galaxy, are all gay men - and I tell Pijay that when his mates are using 'gay' in this matter then it's Nick and Barney they are insulting and making seem less human. I will not tolerate homophobia around me.

Unfortunately, the US has exactly the same trend going. Living in the San Francisco Bay Area, we get considerably less of it here and the adults are very quick and firm to sternly correct the (relatively few) kids who use it, but it still pops up now and then even here. And in the rest of the US, it's unpleasantly ubiquitous.

I have a friend in Florida whose sons used to do it all the time, until they got tired of her saying brightly, "Oh, that movie is gay? You mean it's funny and smart and a great cook like Uncle Bill? Or do you mean it only falls in love with other movies of the same gender? Or do you mean it gets beaten up after school by ignorant bully movies who were raised by bigots? Which do you mean, dear?"

I have a sneaking, sinking suspicion it started in the US and slithered abroad, so on behalf of my country, I'm sorry. And go team Nick and Barney!

Sadly, there are a lot of people around here who use "gay" as a term of general derision. And every time someone does it around me, I call them on it. I try to do so without losing my temper, but I will not tolerate it.

And yay Nick and Barney for being the Dalek -movers! That's very cool.

I love that you're telling Pijay that -- and, as a Doctor Who fan, I'm all giggly/giddy about hearing of Nick and Barney (and have just read this bit aloud to my also-a-Who-fan daughter.) It's really cool that you're humanizing and putting faces to the people who the schoolyard idiots are insulting (I'm not quite sure how to phrase that, but hopefully the intent is clear.)

[livejournal.com profile] cupcake_goth, I loved this post of yours ^_^

That's wonderful. I hereby promise to be a more visibly out ally.

are you “out” as an ally?

Yup and have been for many, many years since my sister and so many friends are gay and never felt it was right that they be treated any differently than anyone else. Nearly got me into many fist fights in high school defending friends and my family.

That's a great post. I am out as an ally too, and I call people on their homophobia whenever I see it.
