Music and interesting looks
(And for those of you who now reflexively roll your eyes at me for that sort of subjectline, NO, this post is NOT about the pretty boys in eyeliner that I tend to witter on about. So there.)
Thanks to a recommendation from
djeternaldarkne, I ordered the latest CD from Emily Autumn. Her music is this odd cross between Rasputina and Tori Amos, with some touches of the Dresden Dolls.
Anyway, Emily Autumn. I at one point owned a copy of Enchant, which was her previous CD. It was interesting, but it didn't quite grab me. It veered too close to twee, and not close enough to quirky. However, Opheliac is heavy on the quirky, thank goodness. In fact, Opheliac sounds like what I think tattered and murderous Victorian dollies would sing.
Of course, it doesn't hurt that she has re-made herself into looking like a tattered, murderous, and slightly punk rock Victorian dolly. Corsets, layers of mismatched stripy stockings and ripped fishnets, bloomers, trailing ribbons, and that smudgy eye makeup look that I am still trying to teach myself. The version of the CD I ordered comes with a DVD of little 2 to 3 minute silent, highly-stylized movies of her showing how to apply makeup, lace yourself into a corset, and so on. I am, of course, delighted by this.
I'm highly impressed by people who can pull off that disheveled, slightly punk rock flavor of Victorian. The few times I've tried it myself, it doesn't look quite right to my eyes. Plus,
stroppy_baggage eyes anything that isn't a polished and elegant presentation with suspicious glances, so deliberate dishevelment just makes him squinch his face up in confused disapproval.
All in all, I'm very glad I picked up the (oooh, deluxe edition!) Opheliac CD. It's a lot of fun, and it'll probably cause me to play with makeup and clothes. Yay music, makeup, and clothes!

this just means that you and I need to set aside a weekend to do photoshoots, and part of one will be to put this look on you.
It will take hours to achieve though. But I have the stockings to do it right for you with, and it will be charming and fabulous. :D

of course, I really just need to see photos of it. But I am always interested in other people's tricks. ;)

From what I can tell, I would use makeup forever black for the smudge surround (truest black powder I have ever seen), and then one of my deep pinks mixed with a red for the color bit. I would do the black partially with the slant edged brush for the heavy like, and partially with a fluffy brush, and that over the pink/red mix. it would be a matter of mixing the exact right pink and red to get the perfect color to go with your eyes, skin, and hair.
Hair is just oldschool big hair in new school pony tails with false falls. that's pretty easy to do.
I don't think Peeve saw you when you were less meticulous, I know there are photos and stuff, but I suspect that is part of his "doesn't suit you" thing. It is not part of his image of you. But *I* remember big wild hair Jilli, and I can easily see this look on you. Not QUITE as punk edged as she is... I am thinking that we could do you up in black, white, and pink with shredded fishnets over mismatched stripes (black and pink on one leg and pink and white on the other...). The trick is that you can't wear meticulous shoes with this look. They must be stompy boots. The prissy shoe just does not go with the punk edge.
However, I have several pair.
And, we need a crenoline to sacrifice for the effect, I think. and maybe a victorian blouse or two as well... Think.. the sorts of things you wear now, after they have been through a war, and matched in the dark... Each piece is definitely YOU, but that is their common bond.
Either lacey tight sleeves or fishnet ones, or a tights shrug even...
Like a post apocalyptic mad hatter... frilly, but kinda crazy too.
clearly, I can absolutely picture this.

Though, Jilli, I am thinking about Vancouver. Do we know anything about the theater scene up thee?

I don't know anything about the theatre scene up there, but I have people I can ask questions of, if you like.

I think she sounds a lot like a Siouxsie/Rasputina/Switchblade Symphony hybrid (in the *best* way of course) and I love the songs I've heard so far. Her voice is very Siouxsie-esque to me and it's a combo I haven't heard before. Kind of like a lot of the things I love all rolled into one. I also love that she encourages people to come to her concerts all dressed up to heighten the 'experience'. *hee*

But then, of course, I'm too worn out to appreciate it.
Meh.

After years and years of experimentation, I've come to a beautiful little truth: I look like hell in that kind of makeup. It makes me look tired and... smeared. She's utterly darling, though.
