[personal profile] danabren left a comment on my post about Catholic aesthetics/music/Gregorian chants that unlocked a core 90s scene memory for many of us: constantly hearing Enigma at every damn kink or kink-adjacent play party.

This led me to see what songs turn up on "Enigma Radio" on Spotify. Guess what the first song was? Go on, guess.

Ah, good 'ol "Caribbean Moon Blue".

There are days when I think about trying to explain to Kids Today what sort of music was played for the first 30-60 minutes at Ye Olde Spooky Clubs because I'm pretty sure they'd never believe me.

I think you might have my cd. Burned a lot of them at one point. It might have been freeing but I didn't stop loving the music, or get less nostalgic.

My personal 1990s associations with both Enya and Enigma are so very, very distinct from each other that it confuses me to find them in the same playlist, even though I had both CDs. Like the dark side and the light side accidentally meeting--one stayed up all night and the other got up early.

I also remember Enigma at every play party and every fetish night. But my foremost memory of Enigma is my sister--who was a black-hearted 19-year-old deathrocker in 1990 when "Sadeness" came out--making fun of the song by mocking the flutey little refrain that comes in after the singer hisses, "Sade, dix-moi"--doot doot do doo. RIP.

Someday I'll hear the kids at Lambert House put Enya on, and then I will crumble to dust.
