OLD GOTH IS OLD

(And using the icon with the StuntHusband, because we are the resident Eldergoths.)

There was a post on Tumblr from a young 'un talking about how their mom used to be really goth, but she hasn't had the time to indulge in stuff since she turned forty, and did anyone have any suggestions to help?

Which was really sweet, and I tried to be helpful. But then the fact that HOLY BATS THERE ARE KIDS ON TUMBLR YOUNGER THAN MY MARRIAGE struck me (once) again, and I had to have a minor freak-out.

I don't want to be younger. I'm happy with my age.
(Tho' I will take that metabolism back, thanks.)
But dear lord, the passage of time freaks me out sometimes.

That was a sweet post. And as an eldergoth who never looked as goth as he wanted, even at his gothiest, I really appreciate your remarks about the importance of "goth on the inside."

The lack of offspring skews my perception of age...frequently. My mother was a grandma at 45! That one still floors me ,that I could easily be a grandmother.

*squints at post to make sure it's not my own offspring writing about my lazygoth ways*

Thankfully not, heh. But she DOES turn 23 in less than a month, which is mindblowing in the extreme. @____@

Finding awesome clothes in the right SIZE can be a bitch if "getting older" means "gaining weight", which can have a lot to do with it. And for people who are at home during the day with their cats (*points to self*), it makes more sense to dress casually in things that are comfortable and easy to care for (and that are reasonably cat-hair-resistant!)

With that said, I'm wearing black capris from Torrid and a girly-fit Convergence t-shirt and a lot of black eyeliner, so I'm still feeling reasonably goth-y, and I'm turning 40 this year. :)

But, yeah -- dressing up can be harder, especially if you're not going out as much. And/or if your feet are no longer cooperating with your love of fine footwear.

I liked the comment in the Miss Lynx column about not having to give up your romanti-goth ways -- Holy Clothing has a lot of sweeping skirts and flow-y blouses. And I collect any pretty black lacy things that I encounter in my travels.

It was a sweet post -- not many kids are thinking with *compassionate* concern about their parents' fashion choices, rather than being intent on claiming that their parents embarrass them somehow!

Yeah, I'm happy enough with my age- 60- but it kind of scares me. Not many years left. Lots of things I'll never get to do.

There are pretty much NO dress up events in this rural small town; most people wear worn out jeans to the best restaurants in town. I pretty much just ignore that and go over the top if that's what I feel like. I've been known to wear lots of black lace and kitty ears to the Mexican restaurant.
